How to use your paper punch card
- Pick the number of punches so a regular fills the card in one to three months. Too many and nobody finishes it.
- Print on heavy card stock (around 100 lb cover, or 250 gsm) so it survives a wallet.
- Punch with something of your own: a custom stamp or a shaped hole punch, so nobody fills it in with a pen.
- Keep a tally of cards handed out and rewards redeemed. It is the only way to know if the program works.
Reward ideas for a punch card
- Coffee shop: the 10th coffee free, or a pastry with the 8th.
- Barbershop or salon: half off the 6th cut, or a free beard trim.
- Bakery: a free loaf after 8 visits.

Price the reward on what it costs you, not on the menu price. A coffee that costs you cents to make feels generous and costs little.
Paper or digital punch card
A paper card is the cheapest way to start, and a good way to test whether your customers respond to a reward. Its limits are well known: it gets lost, it gets wet, it can be faked, and it never tells you who your customers are. A digital punch card keeps the same "buy 9, get 1 free" logic in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet: customers join with a QR code, your staff add punches from a counter app, and the card reminds customers when a reward is close. You can run both for a while: honor the paper cards already out there and move customers to the digital one on their next visit.
